Day 23: Enthroned

Where is Jesus Christ today? At Christmas we celebrate that he descended to earth and was born a human baby. We get a glimpse of his position in heaven from the heralding of the angelic host, the shepherd’s worship, and the wise men’s visit. We see his divinity in his death, an unsurpassed display of perfect love and justice. Certainly, in defeating death, his resurrection is undeniable proof of where he belongs. But his kingship, his utter sovereignty, is perhaps best conveyed to us by his ascension to the throne. This is the true position of the one who is the exact imprint of God’s nature, the radiance of God’s glory, the heir of all things, and the Creator of the world. Enthroned, he reigns forever, and this is a great comfort to those who trust him. He is both righteous and merciful; God has both the right to demand righteousness, and the power to provide it for his creatures. Praise the King who made it possible by becoming incarnate.

Scriptures to consider:
Steadfast love and faithfulness meet;
righteousness and peace kiss each other.
Faithfulness springs up from the ground,
and righteousness looks down from the sky.
Yes, the Lord will give what is good,
and our land will yield its increase.
Righteousness will go before him
and make his footsteps a way.

Psalm 85:10-13

Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs. Hebrews 1:1-4

Hymn to enjoy:
Angels, from the realms of glory,
Wing your flight o’er all the earth;
Ye who sang creation’s story,
Now proclaim Messiah’s birth:

Refrain: Come and worship, come and worship
Worship Christ, the newborn King.

Shepherds, in the fields abiding,
Watching o’er your flocks by night,
God with man is now residing,
Yonder shines the infant light:

Sages, leave your contemplations,
Brighter visions beam afar;
Seek the great Desire of nations,
Ye have seen his natal star:

Saints before the altar bending,
Watching long in hope and fear,
Suddenly the Lord, descending,
In his temple shall appear.

Sinners, wrung with true repentance,
Doomed for guilt to endless pains,
Justice now revokes the sentence,
Mercy calls you—break your chains:

Though an infant now we view him,
He shall fill his Father’s throne,
Gather all the nations to him;
Every knee shall then bow down:

All creation, join in praising
God the Father, Spirit, Son,
Evermore your voices raising,
To th’eternal Three in One:
